Life Lessons

Life Lessons

I am very flattered and honored to be interviewed and videotaped for the TV Show Life Lessons: Cancer Today and Beyond. My interview about coping with cancer, (edited down to a few minutes – don’t worry!!) will be shown during the Live Studio Taping next week.

Thank You cptv.org

I was invited to participate by our dear friend, producer/director John O’Neill. Having him there helped me stay calm and tell my story without crying! Here are some photos from the shoot. I sincerely hope sharing some of my Life Lessons from my journey with Cancer will help someone else facing similar challenges! I also hope some of the footage of me painting rocks for The Kindness Rocks Project Ambassador “Smilow Rocks” makes the cut!

If you are in CT you are invited to join the LIVE studio audience taping on Tuesday, October 15 at 6 p.m.

Registration is required to attend this free event – learn more here. cptv.org/lifelessons/cancertoday

The program will premiere on CPTV Thursday, October 24 at 8 p.m. and repeat on Sunday, November 3 at 7 p.m. and November 16th at 10:30 a.m.

Well the highlight of my weekend was receiving an email update from The Kindness Rock Project yesterday and seeing my rocks for Smilow Rocks as a featured photo! Check out this snippet from the email…

As others have experienced, painting rocks for the purpose of spreading kindness can be very therapeutic! It is my favorite “meditation” practice! Here’s a couple photos of the next batch I have ready for Smilow Cancer Hospital and one of some rocks which are a work in progress. #SmileRockCT

Raise Money for Your Favorite Charity!

Raise Money for Your Favorite Charity!

I was diagnosed with ocular melanoma in November 2012. One of the first things I did after the treatment of my primary tumor, was to search for more information online. I reached out to one organization called A Cure In Sight and offered to create a website for them. By January 2013, the site was live and I had researched available options for raising money for them. Here is a screenshot of the PuraVida Bracelets fundraising page.

In August 2018, I joined the Pura Vida Bracelets Affiliate Marketing Program, and sold bracelets online from this blog. I donated my profits to the annual Charity Fundraiser by my real estate broker, William Raveis Real Estate of Glastonbury, to benefit the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation and once again, to A Cure In Sight. Earlier this year my profits went to my husband’s fundraising efforts in the 2019 Closer to Free Ride to benefit my hospital, Smilow Cancer Hospital.

Another way to raise money for your favorite charity, without having to join the Affiliate Marketing Program, is to create your very own Pura Vida bracelets! These one-of-a-kind bracelets come in two styles and are completely customizable with the colors that match your charity or school colors or even the colors of the season!

These bracelets are so affordable, they’d even make a great souvenier for attending an event! If your organization is tax exempt, after placing your order just send a quick email to fundraise@puravidabracelets.com with your order number and tax exempt form, and they’ll refund your sales tax! It’s simple to begin! Learn more and order yours today!

National Collect Rocks Day!

National Collect Rocks Day!

National Collect Rocks Day is celebrated on September 16 of every year.”

In honor of today, I launched a new blog page about my new Kindness Rock “hashtag” #SmileRockCT to promote awareness about spreading kindness and inspiration through painting and donating rocks!

Instead of collecting rocks today, I collected my thoughts about what this kindness rock project means to me.

I first started painting Kindness Rocks a couple years ago, leaving them for children to find in school yards or adults to find during walks. Leaving these rocks made me smile! I knew how much my mood was lifted the time I found my first rock during a walk near the CT River.

I loved the message being spread by The Kindness Rock Project and was really excited to learn that the hospital where I am being treated for cancer, has their own program called Smilow Rocks! Last week I shared a couple photos on my Instagram, one of a technique I was playing with –

I was thrilled and flattered when another photo showing the back side of the next batch of rocks I am working on for Smilow Cancer Hospital, was shared in The Kindness Rock Project Instagram post. Then the founder of Smilow Rocks commented that it might be a good idea to create my own unique Hashtag! I never thought of sucn a thing before!

I gave this a lot of thought. The word Smile is the one that resonated with me. Painting the rocks is so healing and meditative for me and they make me smile. I believe they can bring a smile to the person receiving one, too. It also is in honor of Smilow, since it is so close in spelling. And last but not least, when I shop on Amazon I always use my Amazon SMILE login and this way a little bit of money goes to Yale New Haven Hospital, home to Smilow Cancer Hospital. So it all fit together for me – all my kindness rock interests rolled into one! It took me a while to research search terms and make sure the one I selected for my unique hashtag was not already being used by someone else for their personal or business use. I saw a lot of photos of people who just had their braces removed, and yes, their smiles do “rock”! So I decided on #SmileRockCT which is also in honor of all the Kindness Rock projects here in my town in Connecticut!

So today I launched a New Blog Page titled #SmileRockCT and hopefully this effort will contribute in some small way to introduce new people to this terrific hobby!

Here are a few of my favorite Rock Painting craft supplies. Please use these links to shop for these or other supplies!

And remember if you do shop on Amazon please make sure to set up your own SMILE account!

Patients Invited to join Support Group!

Patients Invited to join Support Group!

Earlier this week, I was thrown out and banned from the Facebook Support Group for Patients with Ocular Melanoma whose cancer has metastasized. I shared all the details with the folks in a support group I started for patients in New England, New York and New Jersey. So I am not going to rehash the nonsense and drama here. Fortunately, I was given really good advice for how to deal with this situation.

I am proud to invite fellow Patients with Uveal (Ocular) Melanoma to join the newly expanded Uveal (Ocular) Melanoma Patient Support Group!

NOTE: Requests to join from people whose Facebook Profiles cannot be verified (profile photo, history of posts on their wall, friends, etc) or who do not answer the three questions AND agree to the Rules, will not be approved for membership.

Case Presentation about Me!

Case Presentation about Me!

Every few months I search for information about the adverse reaction I had from immunotherapy treatment. I knew my case would be written up at some point because at the time it was so rare.

I just found it in the European Journal of Rheumatology!

This is a photo my husband took while 14 doctors and medical students observed the examination process needed to diagnose myasthenia gravis.

Thank You for your Donations!

Thanks to the kindness of friends, family, and even “Anonymous” we just passed the half way mark toward our fund raising goal for the 2019 Closer to Free Ride!

This ride benefits my hospital, Smilow Cancer Hospital and their programs such as Phase One Clinical Trials and the Melanoma Program!

Thank you also to the folks who made a purchase from Pura Vida using my affiliate links as part of my personal fundraising efforts! I donated my commissions today as well!
